WA double murder accused fit to plead

A 23-year-old man charged with the murder of his father and a neighbour has been deemed fit to plead following a psychiatric assessment.

Rainer Stefanski, 69, was assaulted at his Woodvale house, in Perth's northern suburbs, on September 6 and died in hospital.

His 68-year-old neighbour, Bill Butler, died after intervening in the fight.

Jason Stefanski appeared in Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on Wednesday via video link from Hakea Prison, charged with two counts of murder.

Stefanski previously underwent assessment at the Frankland Centre, a secure psychiatric ward at Graylands Hospital, and has been deemed fit to plead.

His lawyer will seek an independent psychiatric assessment before his next court appearance on October 29.
