WA Darling Range by-election set for June

The Darling Range by-election, triggered by the resignation of disgraced West Australian Labor-turned-independent state MP Barry Urban, will be held on June 23.

Speaker Peter Watson told parliament on Thursday he intended to issue a writ on Tuesday directing the electoral commissioner to conduct a by-election, with the last day for candidate nominations on June 1.

Mr Urban quit parliament last week moments after an inquiry made the unprecedented recommendation he be expelled for committing a "gross and aggravated contempt of parliament" by lying about his education and work history, even providing a forged university degree.

Darling Range was a safe Liberal seat for decades before Mr Urban won with a 5.8 per cent margin in March last year.

The Liberals will be hoping to regain the seat, choosing to focus efforts on the seat over federal by-elections.
