WA cops seek to extradite Postcard Bandit

West Australian Police are applying for the notorious bank robber known as the "Postcard Bandit" to be extradited from Queensland after he was granted parole.

Brenden Abbott has served almost 20 years behind bars, earning his nickname after he taunted police by sending them postcards from around Australia while he was on the run.

He faces outstanding criminal matters in WA that could see him handed another jail term of around 12 years, WA Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan says.

"We are making an application to the DPP today for extradition. I'd expect it to happen very quickly," he said on Thursday.
