WA cops charged over assault

Two West Australian police officers have been charged after a pursuit allegedly ended with one of them repeatedly striking the driver with a baton and then falsifying a prosecution notice.

The Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC) alleges the officers were in pursuit of a driver in August 2013.

After following him to his home, the 29-year-old constable allegedly threw the young driver to the ground, kneed him in the back or neck, and repeatedly hit him with a baton while his arm was held behind his back.

The CCC says the driver did not resist or strike the officer before the alleged assault.

It is also alleged the constable signed a prosecution notice charging the driver with obstructing a public officer, knowing it to be false.

The 50-year-old senior constable, who was driving the police vehicle, is alleged to have provided false information in an evidence statement he completed about the incident.

The constable has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and starting a false prosecution, while the senior constable has been charged with falsifying a record.

Both officers will appear in Rockingham Magistrates Court on October 10.
