WA cabs cut surcharge for non-cash payment

West Australian taxi patrons who pay their fare with non-cash methods will no longer be slugged a surcharge of up to 11 per cent.

Transport minister Dean Nalder has introduced, effective immediately, a surcharge cap of five per cent for passengers using a credit, debit or charge card, manual voucher, e-ticket or a smartphone app to pay for their journey.

"The community agrees that surcharges of up to 11 per cent are too high and cannot be justified," Mr Nalder said on Tuesday.

"For some drivers and operators this will be a big change, however I am confident the industry will adapt and support these changes."

The move comes two months after the NSW government capped taxi fare surcharges for non-cash payments.
