WA beach road rage driver gets more jail

A man who is already behind bars for running over backpackers on a Broome beach has been handed more jail time for possessing a commercial quantity of methylamphetamine.

Kevin James Drage ran down three tourists in October 2012 and was handed a two year jail term for the dangerous driving offence in June 2014.

Drage was sentenced to another six-and-a-half years in jail in the District Court of Western Australia this week after being caught in February 2014 - when he was on bail for the beach offence - arranging to transport about 900 grams of methylamphetamine to the Kimberley and Pilbara regions with two co-offenders.

The 51-year-old hid 444g of the drug inside his ute and planned to bring it to Broome.

Mark Anthony Sowerby hid a similar-sized package within a ute owned by Clifford Robert O'Connor, 61, who intended to sell it in Port Hedland.

Judge Philip McCann said Drage and O'Connor ran separate high-level wholesale drug dealing enterprises "albeit they conducted it like a cartel for their mutual convenience".

"Both were enthusiastically in the drug distribution business and had done it before," he said.

Drage, who is currently serving the full two year sentence for the driving offence, will begin serving his latest, six-and-a-half year sentence in mid-June.

O'Connor was handed a jail term of 10 years and six months, with Judge McCann noting his motives were purely financial.

Drage, on the other hand, claimed he had been using the drugs, but that was not a mitigating factor in sentencing.

Judge McCann noted Drage's 2012 crime was "basically a violent road rage offence and might actually provide some circumstantial evidence to support his assertion that he was using methylamphetamine".

He also noted Sowerby's offending was at a lower level than the other two men and previously sentenced him to five years imprisonment for his role in the operation.
