Urban greening class for Perth mayors

Increasing housing density without destroying Perth's green spaces will be a critical challenge for inner city councils in coming years, the City of Vincent mayor says.

John Carey will be among several local government representatives taking part in a seminar on developing urban greenery and efficient water usage as part of the "202020 Vision" program started by non-profit group Horticulture Innovation Australia.

As Perth local governments attempt to rein in the city's urban sprawl through infill, Mr Carey says it is crucial that it is not at the expense of vegetation.

"I think it is going to become the critical challenge for many local governments - trying to stop the urban sprawl - and what you see from that is a loss of green spaces, a loss of vegetation and trees," he told AAP.
