Toddler Sam Trott's family visits the park where he drowned

The family of a Western Australian toddler who drowned in a lake in Landsdale has visited the scene of his death today and thanked the community for its support.

Two-year-old Sam Trott went missing at about 10.30am on Tuesday after a tradesman working at the family home left the front door open.

The local community had turned out in force over a 48-hour period, joining police and about 100 SES volunteers to search for the little boy who had a love for water.

Sam's body was found yesterday morning, and today his father Matthew, mother Lyndal and four-year-old brother Thomas visited the lake to read tributes left for Sam.

Speaking to 9NEWS off camera, Sam's family thanked everyone for their support and respecting their privacy following the death of the "much loved" toddler.

They spoke about how Sam was a "very special boy" and that while he had his difficulties with autism, he also had a "sparkle in his eye and an infectious smile".

Last night almost 1000 people gathered at Warradale Park in Landsdale to take part in a candlelight vigil for Sam, bringing flowers, teddy bears, balloons, and messages for Sam and his family.
