Prominent WA figure in critical condition after alleged assault outside nightclub

A prominent member of WA's political and mining communities is fighting for life after a serious assault in Perth's inner city.

Tim Picton suffered a head injury after being knocked unconscious on the street outside a nightclub in Northbridge.

The 36-year-old was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition and is being treated for life-threatening injuries.

Picton, now a director at mining giant MinRes, spearheaded the Labor party's campaign in 2021, which saw Mark McGowan get re-elected in a landslide victory.

He also previously worked for Victorian Premier Dan Andrews and his brother Chris Picton is a Minister in the South Australian government.

Police say the 36-year-old was assaulted about 5.35am and struck his head on the pavement near the intersection of James Street and Mountain Terrace.

A 20-year-old man now assisting police with their inquiries.

Officers are urging anyone who saw the incident to come forward.
