People are being warned to look out for territorial magpies with increased reports of spring swooping in Western Australia.

Magpies usually nest between August and October, with males swooping at anyone they perceive as a threat, Department of Parks and Wildlife officer Karen Smith says.

"Although this can be alarming, if you confidently continue on your way, the bird will often retreat to a tree and watch until you leave its territory," she said.
