A teenager who allegedly kicked a Rottnest Island quokka two metres into the air has been charged with animal cruelty.

West Australian Police allege the 18-year-old man kicked the quokka in the back as it was sitting on a road near Geordie Bay settlement on the holiday island.

A police spokesman said officers searched for the small native marsupial but were unable to find it and could not confirm if the injuries it sustained were life threatening.

The Mount Pleasant man was evicted from the island, charged with cruelty to animals and will appear in court on December 23.
