A Perth teenager has been left seriously injured after a high school dare went horribly wrong.

The 13-year-old was dared to backflip from a two-storey balcony at Governor Stirling High school yesterday.

He landed on his head, causing a fractured skull and swelling on the brain.

The teenager's family is by his bedside at Princess Margaret Hospital and told 9NEWS they are extremely distressed.

The Education Department said three students have been suspended after filming the stunt.
