Students angry at the federal government's cuts to education have protested at the Perth office of foreign minister Julie Bishop and had to be told to move on by police.

West Australian police say a vehicle was sent to the Subiaco office just before 1.30pm Thursday.

When the officers arrived, 150-200 protesters were seen leaving the reception area.

They then sat in the middle of the road, blocking traffic, and were told to move on.

Extra police vehicles were sent but by the time they arrived, the protesters had moved to a grassed area.

The spokesman said they would have needed a permit to close the road.

A spokeswoman for Ms Bishop said she was not in her office at the time.
