Sparklers triggered unit fire in Perth

About 100 residents had to be evacuated from a Perth apartment complex in Mosman Park overnight after fire ripped through a top floor unit.

Fire investigators say the blaze started at 11.25pm, when a resident on the 8th floor lit sparklers on a cake, causing a table cloth to catch fire.

The man was celebrating 24 years living at the apartment complex on Wellington Street.

Fire crews managed to stop the flames from spreading to other units, but apartments on the 8th and 7th floor were badly damaged by smoke.

The damage bill is estimated at $1 million.
