Social media will be used to help catch arsonists in Western Australia this summer, with figures showing there were on average more than three deliberately lit fires a day last year.

Acting Police Minister John Day said 1183 arson offences were recorded in 2013 and 190 people were charged.

"The behaviour of these people astounds me," Mr Day said.

He urged the community to be the eyes and ears of police this summer.

"Local police are using Facebook and Twitter accounts so they can immediately engage with residents," he said.

"Residents can also find a mobile number on the police website which connects to their local police team."

Arson carries serious penalties, including a maximum sentence of life in jail.
