A Perth man who started a fire and burnt himself producing a hallucinogenic drug on his kitchen stove while a child was in his house has had his conviction downgraded but his sentence remains the same.

Salvatore Valerio was 47 when he sentenced in April last year to three years and four months in jail for manufacturing dimethyltryptamine (DMT) at his Armadale home and endangering the life, health or safety of a child under 16.

In the WA Court of Appeal on Tuesday, Valerio had his conviction downgraded to attempted manufacture of a prohibited drug in a circumstance of aggravation, but his sentence stands.
