Warning for those funding terrorist leader

Anyone who financially assists former Sydney man and alleged terrorist group leader Mostafa Mahamed could face up to 10 years in prison, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has warned.

Ms Bishop says Mostafa Mahamed, a senior leader for Al-Nusrah Front, has been listed for targeted financial sanctions, making it illegal to use or deal with the 31-year-old's assets or to make assets of any kind available to him either directly or indirectly.

She says he has recruited Australians to fight for Al-Nusrah Front and solicited funds for the organisation.

"He has facilitated violent terrorist acts and through social media has solicited funding and lured vulnerable young people, including from Australia, to become terrorist fighters," she told parliament on Thursday.

She said Farag was the highest ranking Australian within Al-Nusrah Front and had been described as a "magnet for foreign fighters".
