A celebrated surfer charged with murder over the death of a 75-year-old man he knew in the West Australian town of Margaret River has pleaded not guilty on the basis he was of unsound mind.

Surfboard maker Antony Charles Hardy, 69, allegedly inflicted fatal injuries to the 75-year-old victim at a Holbrook Street home in January last year.

Hardy appeared in Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court via video link from Hakea Prison on Wednesday and will face the Supreme Court of WA for the first time on January 20.
