Rayney client wins as drug case collapses

Perth barrister Lloyd Rayney has chalked up a win in his first case since returning to the legal profession, with his client acquitted on drug charges after the prosecution unravelled.

Brendon Wyatt was charged with possessing a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply, but the case was thrown out on Thursday, the fourth day of his trial in the District Court of Western Australia.

After detectives contradicted each other during cross-examination and it emerged a vacuum seal machine had been destroyed by police without the defence team being informed, the prosecutor invited Judge Richard Keen to rule there was no case to answer, which he did.

Mr Rayney in February won back his legal practitioner's certificate, which he'd lost after the Legal Practice Board claimed he was not a fit and proper person to practise law.

It had relied on allegations he arranged for the installation of phone interception equipment at his home before his Supreme Court registrar wife Corryn Rayney was murdered in 2007, but the State Administrative Tribunal overturned the board's decision.

Mr Rayney was acquitted in 2012 of murdering the mother-of-two.
