Pilot crash lands, gets wedged between two hangars

The female pilot of a light plane that crashed into two hangars east of Perth has walked away with only minor injuries.

The small aircraft, a Mooney M20J, hit the Northam Airport hangars mid-morning today and leaked fuel.

Parts of the airport have been evacuated and the airspace around it has been restricted due to the spilled fuel.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said the collision occurred during the initial climb after a touch-and-go landing.

Police said it appeared the 27-year-old pilot started having trouble controlling the aircraft, which left the runway and became wedged between two hangars.

The pilot, who was the only person on board, was taken to Northam Hospital as a precaution.

Emergency services will allow workers to return to the hangars once the area is declared safe.

The ATSB said it had launched an investigation into the accident, with a report expected to be released in several months.
