A pilot has made a lucky escape after a light plane crashed in Western Australia.

The pilot was the only occupant of the light aircraft, which crashed about 300km east of Carnarvon on Saturday morning.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority detected a distress beacon just after 10am.

Shortly after, a Royal Flying Doctor Service plane sent out spotted the pilot waving near aircraft wreckage in the Gascoyne region.

Emergency crew tried to reach the site but could not make it through the difficult terrain.

Luckily, a rescue helicopter was able to land there and has now taken the pilot to Parabudoo.
