Perth Zoo gets a beary merry Christmas

Like a small child under the tree, Bopha the sun bear rips into her Christmas gift with her powerful claws and jaw to reveal a box of puffed oats and honey.

The animals at Perth Zoo don't know its Christmas, but keepers have treated them to their favourite food as part of the zoo's enrichment program, which stimulates the animals' foraging and hunting instincts.

Bopha's box of oats stands in for the trees and logs she would tear open in the wild in search of food.

For Asian elephants Tricia and Permai, stomping on their cardboard tubes and smashing them on the ground with their trunks is the best way to spill out the tasty grass and fruit inside.

In the marsupial enclosure, western brush wallabies Kirra and Glenn happily chew on their Christmas tree made from Albany woolly bush and decorated with carrots, apples, broccoli and pine cones.

But not everyone feels the holiday cheer.

High in a eucalyptus tree, Slater the koala bears a grinchy face - it appears Santa missed the treetops.
