A WWII mortar shell that was found in Perth's northeast was found to be no longer explosive after being removed by military experts.

A member of the public discovered the three-inch mortar on vacant land next to Hepburn Ave, Whiteman on Tuesday and called police, who feared it was still explosive and advised the defence force.

A defence spokesperson said the mortars were used by Australia in WWII.
