Workers cleared of assaulting elderly resident in Perth aged care home

Two workers have been cleared of assaulting an elderly resident at a Perth aged care home.

The 92-year-old’s son installed a camera to work out why his mother, who has dementia, kept falling from her bed.

Glenda Lua and Luz Freeman were today both acquitted of several counts of assault, the magistrate ruling there wasn’t enough “force” used against the 92-year-old to support the charges.

Both carers lost their jobs in 2016 when footage emerged of them apparently dropping the elderly resident onto her bed and throwing a teddy bear at her at Morrison Lodge in Midland.

After a four day trial the magistrate found there was “nothing untoward” in what happened and that the woman presents an “enormous challenge to carers”, in that she’s erratic, unpredictable and often violent.

Both carers wept in court with relief as their verdicts were handed down.
