Perth uni student joins Islamic State

A 23-year-old university student from Perth has left off university and joined the Islamic State jihadist group in Iraq, it's been reported.

Muhammed Sheglabo's family have been left shaken and heartbroken by his decision to join the terror group, The Weekend West newspaper reported on Saturday.

It ran a photo of the former Murdoch University economics student wearing a beard and turban and carrying an assault rifle.

Sheglabo's father told The Weekend West his wife had not stopped crying since they learnt their son had left for Iraq last month after telling them he was going camping.

The father said he had told his wife "we need to forget about him now".

"He has left us. But inside, my heart is breaking."

The family contacted police when they didn't hear from Sheglabo.

Police later got back to them and showed them Sheglabo's newly set up Twitter page, which boasted of his arrival in Iraq, along with images of him ready to do battle.

The family migrated to Australia from Libya in 2010.
