A case of mistaken identity on social media has wrought havoc on a young Perth man’s life after he received hate mail and death threats for an act he did not commit.

Liam Powell has told 9NEWS about the bullying he has received online after a photo went viral showing a boy urinating on a war memorial.

The image was captioned with, “This is Liam Powell” and was taken over nine years ago in the UK.

“I felt violated, and I don’t know who is behind it,” he said.
