A 51-year-old man has been charged after he allegedly set fire to a woman, then her house, in Perth.

Police say the man threw "burning material" over the 52-year-old woman at her Midvale property on Sunday night, inflicting serious burns to 30 per cent of her body, mainly her head, neck and throat.

He then allegedly threw an incendiary device into the home as he left, sparking a fire that caused about $150,000 damage.

After his arrest, he was taken to hospital for treatment of serious burns to his hands.

The man was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and criminal damage by fire, and will face a bedside hearing on Monday.

The victim, who knows her attacker, is in a critical but stable condition at the same hospital.
