Perth man guilty of partygoer's murder

A man has been found guilty of murdering a partygoer at a 21st birthday in Perth.

Jamie Devine, 20, died in hospital after Ashley James Gunson, 24, stabbed him in the heart with a pair of scissors at his cousin's birthday party in Atwell on January 11.

Gunson admitted to stabbing Mr Devine during a brawl but claimed he acted in self-defence.

A Supreme Court jury found him guilty of murder after deliberating for several hours.

Gunson was also found guilty of unlawfully wounding Brodie Brouns during the same altercation, but was acquitted of the unlawful wounding of Karl Viandante.

Both Mr Brouns and Mr Viandante suffered serious wounds to their arms.

During the trial, the court heard Gunson stabbed Mr Devine in the heart until the scissors could go no further.

He then fled the party but was chased by a group of people who assaulted him.

Police later found Gunson's clothes half-burned in a bucket at his home.

Defence lawyer John Bougher told the court Gunson did not intent to kill Mr Devine.

Gunson is scheduled to be sentenced on March 9.
