Perth man gets more time for servo assault

A man who punched a father unconscious in front of the victim's daughters outside a Perth service station has had his jail term increased to more than four years.

Dylan Edward Ghilardi was convicted after a trial of causing grievous bodily harm to Kenneth Akers in April 2013 after both men had been drinking separately.

Derogatory remarks were made about Mr Akers' daughters, then aged 16 and 19, while Ghilardi and his friends were driving away, prompting the victim to shout out to them.

Ghilardi then punched Mr Akers unconscious, causing him to hit his head on the ground and inflicting a brain injury, requiring him to spend six weeks in hospital.

Mr Akers suffered injuries that affected his mobility, memory and personality, and he spent some time in a psychiatric hospital.

Ghilardi was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for the assault on Mr Akers.

But prosecutors appealed the sentence, arguing that it was manifestly inadequate for the seriousness of the crime.

On Monday, the Court of Appeal agreed and increased Ghilardi's sentence to four years and three months behind bars.

He will be eligible for parole.
