People in Perth and WA's southwest have been warned to brace for possible flash flooding and thunderstorms along with gale force winds on Wednesday.

A severe weather warning is current for an area southwest of Geraldton to Southern Cross to Esperance for damaging and locally destructive winds, heavy rainfall and abnormally high tides, Bureau of Meteorology spokesman Neil Bennett said.

The front was expected to reach Perth at 10am (WST), with heavy rain of more than 50mm and hail and strong winds of more than 125km/h.

Dangerous surf and significant beach erosion are predicted between Cape Naturaliste and Albany.

"Residents in the southwest of WA usually experience a front as windy as this five times a year," Mr Bennett said.
