Perth Aussie Day fireworks will go ahead

The Australia Day fireworks show in Perth will go ahead, despite calls for the event money to instead be given to victims of the bushfire in the state's South West region.

The City of Perth, which holds the extravagant display each year, said the majority of expenses for the show had already been made.

However, it is working to facilitate fundraising at the event, a spokesman said.

An online petition at Change.org urging the council to divert the cost of the fireworks to help those left homeless by the blaze has reached more than 8000 signatures.

The fire, which was sparked by lightning on Wednesday, killed two elderly men and wiped out most of the small community of Yarloop, where 128 homes were lost.
