Paraplegic pleads guilty over Perth siege

A man who was left a paraplegic and partially blinded after being shot by police has pleaded guilty to charges including taking five people hostage in a siege.

Daniel Ashley, 27, burst into the Perth home of a 23-year-old woman he knew in June last year, armed with a gun and baton, taking her and four other people hostage for three hours.

When he emerged from the Mosman Park house, Ashley ignored calls to drop his gun and was shot once before falling to the ground, then pointed his weapon at officers who shot him again.

The gun was later discovered to be a replica firearm.

In addition to being left a paraplegic, Ashley was partially blinded in one eye and spent several months in hospital.

Part of his face remains scarred from the shooting.

Ashley appeared in Fremantle Magistrates Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to eight charges including being armed in a way that may cause fear, aggravated assault, aggravated burglary and five counts of kidnapping.

Magistrate Steven Malley ordered a pre-sentence report ahead of Ashley's first appearance in the West Australian District Court on May 6.

Ashley had his bail renewed and refused to speak to the media as he left court in his wheelchair.
