Orders to merge Perth councils revoked

Plans to merge Perth's local councils will finally be officially shelved this week.

The West Australian government's plans to halve the number of metropolitan councils were derailed last month after three of them voted the proposal down.

Boundary changes that were scheduled to take effect on July 1 will now no longer go ahead, with the notice that the Governor's Orders have been revoked to be published in the Government Gazette on Friday.

The Department of Local Government and Communities said work was continuing on the proposed City of Perth Act, which the government intended to introduce to parliament in the current session.

The legislation would recognise Perth as WA's capital city and bring Kings Park, Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre, Perth Children's Hospital and the University of WA into its jurisdiction.

Premier Colin Barnett has previously said the state would not compensate councils for the failed merger plans.
