One person has been treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in the processing plant of BHP's massive Mt Whaleback iron ore mine in Western Australia's Pilbara region.

The company said the fire on Thursday afternoon caused operations to be suspended but mining resumed at full capacity on Friday morning while processing re-started in areas unaffected by the blaze.

BHP is investigating the cause of the fire.
