On the trail in WA: week two

The spotlight for the second week of the election campaign in WA was again on the seat of Fremantle, this time with the Liberal candidate in hot water.

FEDERAL CAMPAIGN TRAIL IN WA:

Monday, May 16

* Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visits Austal ships in Henderson to talk up the company's work for the navy, but is instead asked about Liberal candidate for Fremantle, Sherry Sufi, who posted comments online opposing the apology to the Stolen Generation and the legalisation of same-sex marriage. Mr Sufi is not present

* Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese meets Labor's candidate for Swan, Tammy Solonec, and for Hasluck, Bill Leadbetter, to inspect Gateway WA, saying the government was taking credit for the Labor-initiated project. Mr Albanese was then flanked by candidates for Fremantle and Brand, Josh Wilson and Madeleine King, to pledge $2 million on plans for a new harbour at Kwinana

Tuesday, May 17

* Mr Albanese joined Mr Wilson and candidate for Burt, Matt Keogh, to promise half of the cost of building the $160 million Armadale Road Bridge

Thursday, May 18

* Communications Minister Mitch Fifield and Member for Hasluck, Ken Wyatt, visit Bickley to discuss the mobile black spot program

Friday, May 18

The Liberal candidate for Fremantle Sherry Sufi stood down as it emerged there was footage of him mocking his former boss, the WA parliament speaker Liberal MP Michael Sutherland, using graphic sexual references. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull had already snubbed him while visiting his electorate during the week over controversial views linking same-sex marriage to polygamy and polyamory and opposition to the apology to the Stolen Generation. Labor last week dumped its candidate Chris Brown for not disclosing spent teenage convictions.
