No rebuild for Alcoa houses razed by fire

Aluminium giant Alcoa says it won't rebuild company-owned houses within a buffer zone for the Wagerup Alumina Refinery that were destroyed by the recent devastating bushfire in Western Australia's south.

The blaze at Waroona and Yarloop in January killed two people and destroyed 162 houses, including 35 Alcoa properties in a zone established in 2001 to allow for future expansion of the company's bauxite residue storage area.

"It makes no sense to rebuild houses on properties Alcoa purchased to establish a buffer zone for the Wagerup refinery," Alcoa of Australia managing director Michael Parker said.
