No industrial action over Perth bus fires

Perth bus drivers have reversed their decision to stop work on Wednesday after two buses burst into flames within 48 hours.

A fire at the Esplanade Busport last week completely destroyed a Mercedes-Benz OC-500, the same gas-fuelled model involved in 14 fires in WA in the five years to 2013.

Two days later a diesel-fuelled Mercedes-Benz O405 NH caught fire at Whitfords Station, leaving it severely scorched and unlikely to be put back into service.

The Transport Workers Union was planning a stop work meeting for its Transperth members but that has been cancelled.

It has instead agreed to form a working group with the Public Transport Authority and the bus contracting companies to address any outstanding issues or driver concerns.

The PTA will also offer drivers a once-off refresher training course on extinguishing fires and emergency response procedures.
