New shark detection starts at Perth beach

New shark detection sonar technology will start operating at Perth's City Beach from next week.

Perth-based company Shark Mitigation Systems says it is placing equipment on the sea floor that is linked to solar-powered surface buoys about 300 metres from the shore, which will be able to detect sharks as they come close.

Two people were killed in shark attacks in a week in WA this year - diver Doreen Collyer and surfer Ben Gerring. Other shark hazard mitigation methods used around Perth include aerial and beach patrols, enclosures at five beaches, shark tagging and monitoring, jet skis and watch towers, a dedicated shark response unit at the Department of Fisheries and a drone technology trial.
