New 'one metre' law for cyclists begins in WA
WA drivers could face hefty fines if they don’t leave at least a one metre gap when overtaking cyclists, under new laws protecting riders coming into effect today.
On roads where the speed limit is more than 60 kilometres per hour the clearance is one-and-a-half metres.
The penalty for breaking the law is a $400 fine and four demerit points.
Drivers are also allowed to cross double white lines to ensure the appropriate passing distance.
The law has been three years in the making, with the previous law in WA stating that drivers must give ‘sufficient’ distance when overtaking cyclists.
Victoria and the Northern Territory are the last two Australian states to consider implementing the specified minimum passing distance rule.
