Musician likely drowned in WA lagoon

PERTH, June 14 AAP - A drunk hip hop musician who disappeared while swimming in a lagoon is likely to have drowned rather than have been attacked by a shark, taken his own life or faked his death, WA's deputy state coroner has found.

Samir Joseph Abraham, known as Murffelz in the music industry, was at the Yanchep Lagoon beach in October 2013 when he tried to swim to the reef, telling friends he wanted to stand near a marker pole and shout: "King Kong ain't got s*** on me."

After initially swimming strongly, Mr Abraham then signalled to his friends, possibly for assistance due to the current, which was not excessive but might have caused him difficulty because he was drunk.

While drifting slightly north, the 30-year-old disappeared under water and was not seen again despite an extensive search for more than two days.

WA deputy state coroner Evelyn Vicker said Mr Abraham seemed happy and had everything to live for.

"There were no indications there were any problems in his life which would cause him to be reckless with his life," she said.

Ms Vicker said there was no evidence Mr Abraham survived and there was no reason for him to have either faked his disappearance or ended his life.

She noted he had not pursued his music or posted on social media since the incident, and neither his girlfriend nor his mother had heard from him.

"Despite the sighting of sharks there is no evidence by way of torn clothing or remains to indicate the deceased was the victim of a shark attack," she added.

Ms Vicker said it was not possible to determine whether Mr Abraham suffered injuries or a medical problem, but he clearly became unconscious and drowned.

She concluded his death occurred by way of misadventure.
