More WA Uber drivers charged

Uber drivers continue to be prosecuted by the West Australian government even as Premier Colin Barnett warms to the service.

The Department of Transport told AAP on Tuesday that 29 Uber drivers were facing the charge of operating a taxi service illegally, with 10 of them charged in the past three months.

Mr Barnett had previously acknowledged Uber's popularity, and said the state government would look at ways to accommodate the service in legislation.

"Uber has come into the market - it is not meeting the legal requirements of a taxi service, we all know that - but it is popular," Mr Barnett said.

WA Taxi Industry Forum chief executive Howard Lance said the premier needed to take a harder line against Uber.

"To say that lots of people like them is just sheer populism, it is not leadership," Mr Lance said.

"My major concern is that Uber will get so firmly entrenched that it will be nearly impossible to get rid of them."
