Mistaken death notice for former WA MP

In an embarrassing case of mistaken identity, a death notice has been published for a former deputy premier of Western Australia who is still alive.

In the Deaths section of The West Australian newspaper on Wednesday, a condolence tribute was erroneously posted for Malcolm John "Mal" Bryce, who served as deputy premier under Brian Burke in the 1980s.

"Sincerest sympathy to his family. Mal served in the Legislative Assembly for 16 years and was deputy premier for five years. He was an esteemed WA Former Members Association member and gave generously to public life - may he rest in peace. Ron Leeson, president, committee and members," the notice read.

But the 72-year-old ALP member is still alive, prompting a correction on Thursday.

"Please note that the death notice for Mal Bryce yesterday was not for the former deputy premier, it was an error made due to a person having the same name," the newspaper wrote.
