The Matagarup Bridge connecting East Perth to Optus Stadium will not be completed before the end of May.

WA Transport Minister Rita Staffioti said there is a new target date of June to finish building the footbridge.

The $91.5-million bridge is expected to be used by about 14,000 people on event days.

The two main arches of the footbridge were placed 75m above the Swan River in earlier this month.

The bridge has been plagued with delays after a Malaysian contractor hired to fabricate the steel components failed to meet deadlines.

The new contracts locally started in August – the arches constructed by Civmec and the decking by Fremantle Steel in Henderson.
