Man found guilty of murder in machete attack at petrol station

A 30-year-old man has been found guilty of murder for the fatal machete attack that claimed the life of a stranger at a petrol station in the northern suburbs of Perth. 

Immadeen Sayed claimed he was defending himself when he killed 22-year-old Atbin Razavianroudbarden in July 2023. The jury deliberated for six hours before disagreeing on Thursday.

Razavianroudbarden's family was present in the courtroom and could not contain their emotions as Sayed was found guilty.

They described him as "a gentle, kind person who was loved by everyone in our community and never wished harm on anyone".

Sayed claimed self-defence, stating that he was attempting to protect his brother and four-year-old niece during an altercation. However, the jury did not accept this defense.

Security camera footage captured Sayed arriving at the Lansdale 7-Eleven convenience store after receiving a call for help from his brother, who had been involved in a fight. 

The footage did not reveal the presence of the machete, which Sayed had concealed behind his back.

Sayed used the machete to attack his victim before fleeing the petrol station. 

He later confessed to his girlfriend, saying, "I think I hurt someone".

Sayed has been in custody since the attack. He will return to court in two months to learn his sentence.

"It's a great loss for our community, and we wouldn't wish this upon any family," brother Cyrus Takhfifi said.
