Man fleeing WA police fails at carjacking

A 21-year-old man faces a string of charges after he and a female accomplice led police on a wild chase through Perth's northeastern fringe after allegedly burgling two properties.

During the pursuit through West Swan on Wednesday afternoon, the pair allegedly drove in the wrong direction towards coming traffic, over a median strip, though a red light and on a footpath.

Police say the vehicle narrowly missed two pedestrians walking a dog, collided with another car and sideswiped three vehicles and a truck.

After a stinger was deployed, the driver allegedly fled on foot.

Police say that as he ran down Reid Highway, he was seen trying to open the doors of stationary cars, at one point grabbing a female driver by the shirt and attempting to pull her from her seat while her 13-year-old son watched from a passenger seat.

But she was wearing a seatbelt and he wasn't able to pull her from the car.

He approached the passenger side but as police officers approached, he again tried to run before being caught and arrested.

The Koondoola man has been charged with offences including stealing a motor vehicle, aggravated burglary, reckless driving, trespass and stealing.

He was refused bail and will appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Police are searching for his female accomplice, who jumped out of the vehicle as it was briefly stopped at the corner of Reid Highway and West Swan Road, and ran into bushland.

She is described as fair, with long brown hair and in her mid-20s.

She was wearing grey tracksuit pants and a blue long-sleeved shirt.
