Man charged with impersonating firefighter

A 23-year-old man has been charged with impersonating a firefighter at two separate blazes in Western Australia.

The man claimed to be a volunteer firefighter when he was spotted in a firefighter's uniform at a blaze in Hopeland on January 8, police allege.

Suspicions were raised when he left the scene in a regular car and it was later established that he was a probationary volunteer firefighter and didn't have the authority to wear a uniform, attend fire grounds or act in any official capacity.

A day earlier, the man allegedly used his own car, fitted with emergency lights, to breach a vehicle control point in Waroona.

Police searched his Kelmscott house and seized several items that were reported stolen during burglaries at the volunteer-based Parkerville Bush Fire Brigade.

The investigation into those burglaries is ongoing.

He's so far been charged including unlawful possession, two counts of impersonating a public officer and three counts of receiving.

He is scheduled to appear in Armadale Magistrates Court on January 28.
