The man was treated at the scene and has been taken to Peel Health Campus.

"It looks like a shark bite," a St John Ambulance spokesman told AAP.

The Department of Fisheries is investigating and has closed Pyramid Beach until morning.

The beach closure will be reviewed later today.

The attack followed a sighting of an unknown species of shark off the same beach at 4.50pm, Surf Life Saving WA advised.

"Fisheries investigating," Surf Life Saving WA tweeted of the attack.
