A light plane has crashed nose-first on to a road in WA's Great Southern after running into engine troubles.

The two-seater, RV9 lost power and clipped trees, crashing on a service road near the Muirs Highway in Mount Barker on Sunday evening.

The pilot and passenger escaped with minor injuries and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau will investigate.
