West Australian Labor wants to boost the state's defence industry if they win government at the March state election.

Leader Mark McGowan, a former navy lawyer, outlined the party's defence strategy on Friday, which included appointing a defence advocate, establishing Defence West and appointing a minister for defence issues.

Labor's goal is to see more naval shipbuilding in WA, with Mr McGowan saying the recent defence contracts awarded to SA were a missed opportunity for the state.
