Kite-surfer rescued from Perth sand bar

A rescue helicopter skilfully landed on a sand bar to help a stranded kite-surfer injured in Perth's Swan River.

Water police and paramedics on land were unable to reach the woman in her 20s because of her tricky location at the end of the Point Walter spit.

"She was a fair way out on the sand bar and had spinal injuries," a spokesman for St John's Ambulance said.

"We decided that the better way to transport her to hospital was with the rescue helicopter.

"We did also have the assistance of water police but they couldn't get in close enough because the water was too shallow."

The woman was taken to Royal Perth Hospital for assessment by the helicopter on Thursday morning.
